sacromonte

The barrio of Sacromonte in Granada one of the birthplaces of Flamenco. It has always been a creative are. This is where the many musicians, artesanas, and artists of Granada live. There are as many as 2000 caves in the valley.

The Caves

There are 2 kinds of caves in Sacromonte, the white washed buildings converted from caves to houses a hundered years ago and the more 'organic' kind. Many of the more basic caves have hot water solar power, free water and solar ovens. Some have two levels. The ground floor once housed the animals. They always maintain a temperature of 18 degrees. Some have more than 5 bedrooms and the best view of the city

Flamenco at Chumbera

The caves of Sacromonte are also the place to find many flamenco shows. Every Saturday night for the next three months 'Chumbera' has a Flamenco show at 9:30pm every Saturday. The prics is 7 Euros entrance. The earlier you get there the better the seats. The view form the auditorium looks out over the Alhambra (see image on right) for a spectacular performance, not to be missedand 5 mins from the rambutan.

Other things to do

Go to bar los Faroles for sopme tapas. One of the birthplaces of the Zambra style of Flamenco and open every day. Next to los Farrorles is bar flamenco which opens its doors on saturday after 11pm for a free flamenco jam session.

Go to the cave museum, which has open air cinema in the spring, the monastary of Sacromonte and the holy caves of san Cecilio, or hike into the mountains to ishameils tea house, but thats hard to find. f you Kepp walking to the end of the valley, why not stop and continue to the sierra Nevada.
